Gay candidates are banned from sheriff's election in Alabama

GAY INFONESIA - Gay candidates are banned from sheriff's election in Alabama. A gay businessman who once was a policeman and married to another man said Republican leaders in North Alabama forbade him from voting to become a sheriff after a study that included questions about his sexual orientation.

Associated Press reported Jason White told the local News-Courier of Athens website that some members of the Republican Executive Committee in Limestone County on Tuesday decided to refuse his candidacy to become a sheriff, a decision he said related to the fact that he was gay. "I think this is very clear!" White said.

The 40-year-old White says he now plans to run as an independent sheriff, and Republicans have to find another candidate if they want to beat Mike Blakely, a long-time pet buyer from the Democratic Party.

"I am disappointed, but I do not give up," said White who has been a policeman for 22 years and has a private security firm in Huntsville.

The newspaper reported that the head of the Republican Executive Committee in the area Noah Wahl declined to comment on the reasons for rejecting White's candidacy.
